For Donors: How Donating Works, Receipts, and Recurring Donations

How donating works

Choose an amount (or enter your own), then pay however is easiest: Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link fill in your name and address in one tap, or you can enter a card directly. Before your payment completes, you'll confirm a short set of legally required certifications — that you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, giving your own funds, not a federal contractor, and at least 18. This confirmation step is required by campaign finance law for every online political contribution.

Why we ask for your employer and occupation: once your total giving to a campaign passes your jurisdiction's reporting threshold ($200 for federal campaigns), the campaign is legally required to report your employer and occupation. The donation page only asks when the law requires it.

Some pages show a "recent supporters" feed. It displays first names and city only, appears on a delay, and can be turned off by the campaign. (Note that for contributions over the reporting threshold, campaign finance filings are public records regardless.)

If you make a one-time gift, some pages will ask once whether you'd like to make it monthly instead. It's entirely your choice — recurring giving is never pre-selected, and it only starts if you check the authorization box yourself.

Your receipt

After you donate, a receipt is emailed to you automatically with the amount, the committee you supported, and the required legal disclosures. Political contributions are not tax-deductible. If you don't see the receipt, check your spam folder or contact the campaign.

Managing a recurring donation

Every receipt for a recurring donation includes a Manage my donation link. It opens your personal management page — no account or password needed. From there you can:

  • Change frequency — weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly.
  • Update your card — enter a new payment method in seconds. If a recent charge failed, it retries automatically once your new card is saved.
  • Pause your donations and resume whenever you like.
  • Cancel at any time. You'll confirm with the email address you donated with, and no further charges will occur.

If a payment fails

If your card expires or a recurring charge can't be processed, we email you a link to update your payment method. Nothing is ever charged without your original authorization, and you can cancel from the same link instead if you prefer.

Payment security

Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card number never touches Vottiv's or the campaign's servers, and you can pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Link where available. Your confirmation page shows the verified details of your donation directly from our records.
