Using the Already Voted Filter
The Already Voted filter lets you select an election on any group, and Vottiv will automatically exclude voters from that group as they vote. Once a voter's ballot is recorded in the voter file, they'll stop appearing in your SMS campaigns, phone banks, canvassing routes, direct mail lists, polls, and data exports for that group — no manual work required.
During an election period, campaigns often want to stop contacting voters who have already cast their ballot. In Vottiv, you can do this by applying the Already Voted filter to your voter groups. Because outreach tools in Vottiv, such as canvassing, texting, calling, and other contact methods, pull voters directly from a voter group, applying this filter ensures that you will only be contacting voters who have not yet voted.
What It Does
This means your team stays focused on voters who still need to be contacted, and you stop spending money reaching people who've already voted.
How It Works
When you set an active election on a group, Vottiv checks each voter's vote history in real time. If a voter has a record of voting in that election — whether they voted in person, by absentee ballot, or via early voting — they're automatically filtered out whenever the group is used.
The filter applies everywhere the group is used:
Text message (SMS/MMS) campaigns
Phone banking sessions
Canvassing route generation
Direct mail campaigns
Poll distribution
Data exports
You don't need to update your group filters manually or create separate groups as the election progresses. The Already Voted filter handles it for you.
Where to Find It
Go to your Groups page in the web dashboard.
Open the group you want to configure.
Click the group settings button (gear icon) to open the Edit Group Settings modal.
Under the election filter dropdown, you'll see a list of available elections for your state.
Select the election you want to filter by, or choose "No election filter" to turn it off.
Click Save.
Open the voter group you plan to use for outreach.
Click Edit.

A pop-up window will appear showing the group name and the Already Voted filter.
Click into the Already Voted filter and select the election you want to reference.

Click Save Changes.
What You'll See
When you select an election, Vottiv will show you a preview of the impact — how many voters in your group have already voted in that election and will be excluded.
Once saved, you'll see a green indicator on the group confirming the active election filter is in place.
Once saved, the voter group will automatically exclude voters who have already voted in the selected election.
Things to Know
The filter is per-group. You can set different elections on different groups, or leave some groups unfiltered.
It updates automatically as new vote history data comes in from the voter file. As more voters cast ballots throughout the election period, they'll be excluded without any action on your part.
Turning the filter off doesn't delete anything. Your group's other filters stay exactly as they are — the election filter is applied separately on top of them.
The available elections in the dropdown are based on your organization's state.
All vote types are covered: in-person, absentee, early voting, and mail-in ballots.
Common Questions
Q: Do I need to rebuild my canvassing routes after voters are excluded?
A: New routes will automatically reflect the filter. Existing routes that were already generated won't retroactively change, but any new route generation will exclude already-voted voters.
Q: Will this affect my group's voter count?
A: Yes — the count shown for the group will decrease as voters are excluded. This is expected and reflects your actual contactable universe.
Q: Can I see who was excluded?
A: The vote history data is visible on individual voter profiles. You can also export your group data to see which voters have voted.
Q: What if I want to still contact voters who already voted (e.g., for a thank-you message)?
A: Simply turn off the election filter on that group, or create a separate group without the filter for your thank-you outreach.
